"IT is constantly changing - with no signs of slowing down. It is impossible for one person, even dedicated on a specific product, to know everything. Having an environment like UG Focus enables users to step back and focus (hence the name) on the things they do not have time to pick up during the day-to-day. It’s knowledge that can be put to use their first day back." - Scott Morley, Principal Application Architect at OneNeck It Solutions
User Group Focus is a deep-dive, educational conference dedicated to the success of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations & Dynamics AX users. The User Group Focus Programming Committee is comprised of volunteers who worked diligently to create the final schedule. They determined the most relevant and useful session topics based on the community's session proposals, plus your comments, surveys, and feedback galore to provide you with the content you want.
One dedicated member of this committee is Scott Morley, Principal Application Architect at OneNeck It Solutions.
has been in IT longer than it has been called IT. In that time, he has touched on almost every aspect of IT and business process and has found that ERP is the most complex, trying and downright fun place to spend time. In this Q&A, Scott shares why User Group Focus is an invaluable learning opportunity for the community.Q: What are you most looking forward to about User Group Focus?
A: Meeting up with friends and colleagues that I don’t get to see very often throughout the year. Phone and video are nice, but nothing beats face to face.Q: What is your job as an 'Implementations, Upgrades & Updates' track leader on the Programming Committee? Any sessions or speakers you are especially excited about?
A: My job is to help identify sessions that will bring the most value to attendees. It’s not an easy task as we get so many sessions that would be worthwhile, but unless we wanted the conference to last for a few weeks we need to be picky. We have so many great speakers this year, I am looking forward to more sessions than I can fit in. One speaker in particular that I am really excited about is Chad Carnes, who has been absent for a few years. Chad is a force of nature when it comes to knowledge sharing and anyone who walks away from his sessions without learning something was not paying attention at all. Q: What makes User Group Focus unique when compared to other conferences?
A: I think the willingness of the community to share is really unique to the UG and Focus really provides a venue for that. In a work environment where knowledge is power it is far too easy to hoard information, but real power comes from enabling those around you and Focus has that in spades. Q: Why is it important for implementers to develop a process when it comes to roll-outs of implementations, updates, or upgrades? How will User Group Focus help develop that?
A: Process is important in any development or administration effort, it is the cornerstone to governance. The days of Wild West coding are gone and good riddance! With the change of pace in today’s IT world it is so easy to miss something. Process – true, defined, repeatable process, is the best way to catch breaking changes before they hit production. UG Focus, by bringing together so many people who have “been there, done that”, creates the perfect place to share war stories. One person’s hard-won victory around implementing a new feature is another person’s lesson learned. Q. How do you expect User Group Focus to help elevate attendees professionally?
A: As mentioned, IT is constantly changing - with no signs of slowing down. It is impossible for one person, even dedicated on a specific product, to know everything. Having an environment like UG Focus enables users to step back and focus (hence the name) on the things they do not have time to pick up during the day-to-day. It’s knowledge that can be put to use their first day back.
Q: Any advice for potential attendees?
A: Anyone who goes to Focus with just the intent to learn or just the intent to teach is missing out on a full half of the experience. Everyone has something of value to share, but only if they have the courage to do it.
